Prairie Winds RC&D

Enhancing quality of life for all residents in concert with our natural resources.

Prairie Winds Resource Conservation & Development Inc. was formed in 2001 and is a 501c3 nonprofit corporation that provides assistance to the citizens of Cerro Gordo, Franklin, Hancock, Winnebago, Worth, and Wright Counties in Iowa.  Our goals and objectives are to conserve, protect, wisely develop, and effectively manage our natural, community, and economic resources.  USDA ‘s Natural Resources Conservation Service(NRCS) provides assistance to the RC&D Council via the Resource Conservation and Development program which authorized the designation of Prairie Winds RC&D in 2002.  Designation of the area in the program allows NRCS to provide staffing and other means of financial support the Council in order to implement objectives set forth in locally developed and agency approved Long Range (Area Plan) and Annual Plan of Work documents.

Prairie Winds Resource Conservation and Development is operated by a 12 member Board of Directors with two volunteer representatives from each of our six county area.  The board is made up of one County Supervisor and a one County Soil and Water Conservation District Commissioner from each county.  Each entity has the flexibility to nominate someone to serve in their role on the board subject to approval by a majority of other RC&D board members.  Currently two positions are filled by County Economic Development Corporation Executive Directors representing Soil and Water Conservation Districts helping to diversify the board membership and perspectives on economic development activities.  This grass roots board sets the goals in the Area and Annual plans to meet the needs of the local constituents they represent.  The board approves projects brought forward from citizens, local groups, and community leaders.  They then work with the USDA staff to provide advice, project planning assistance, and implementation assistance to those projects.

Prairie Winds RC&D is a public private partnership that fills voids in rural community access to technical and financial assistance from public and private sources to improve communities and natural resources in the six county RC&D designated area.   If you have a project that is consistent with our goals and objectives or would like more information about Prairie Winds RC&D please contact one of the current local board members, contact our office by phone or in person via the Contact US page  Thank you for your interest in Prairie Winds Resource Conservation and Development Inc.
